A vase of flowers

Thank you

Paul Gauguin

1896, oil on canvas.

Produced in Tahiti after Gauguin moved there from France, this painting was sold to Degas, an early admirer. The vase itself is placed centrally and only decorated in gold lines. The muted colours of the background contrast perfectly with the exotic flowers themselves.

The National Gallery, founded in 1824, is situated in Trafalgar Square London. The entire collection of over 2,300 paintings dating from mid-13th century to 1900 belongs to the nation.
