Happy Vaisakhi

Vaisakhi (also known as Baisakhi) is the Sikh New Year festival. It is one of the most siginificant dates in the Sikh calendar. It commemorates the founding of the Sikh order, called the Khalsa, by Guru Gobind Singh, the 10th Sikh Guru. (Sikhism was founded during the 15th and 16th century by ten consecutive spiritual leaders called Gurus). The Khalsa was formed out of necessity to defend the Sikh faith from oppression by the reigning Mughals.

As in India, Vaisakhi in the UK is celebrated in colourful and vibrant style. Services are held at Sikh temples ("Gurudwaras") and processions are held consisting of singing and dancing (including Bhangra!). Parades take place across the UK, particularly in areas of high Sikh population such as Southall and Birmingham. Vaisakhi is also celebrated each year in Trafalgar Square with support from the Lord Mayor of London, a testament to how popular the occasion has become.
